Mentorship and mentor as sociocultural phenomena: article review

The peer-reviewed journal “Human. Culture. Education” published the article “Mentorship and Mentor as Sociocultural Phenomena,” written by Elena Grinko. The author analyzes mentorship and mentors from the perspective of their sociocultural nature. In addition to the theoretical overview, the article presents the findings of an empirical study that identified the most important characteristics of mentorship in medicine and the personal qualities of a mentor. The crucial sociocultural functions of mentorship in medical education and healthcare are as follows: 1) to assist with the development of new knowledge, practical experience and profession-wide cultural behavior required for successful work; 2) to provide moral support to a young professional, to help them in becoming more confident and proficient; 3) to familiarize with the medical corporate culture, specific health facility and its traditions; 4) to communicate with a young physician so in order to develop communication skills in the medical field; 5) to influence directly or indirectly the personal culture of a young professional, the professional and personal, moral and ethical qualities of a doctor.
